Program Overview
The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa seeks to identify 30 high achieving Ethiopian
students, to join the EducationUSA Scholars Program (ESP). Our mission is to assist our Scholars in the
admissions process in U.S. colleges and universities to better their academic futures, with the goal of
producing highly-skilled and widely-educated leaders to build tomorrow’s Ethiopia.
ESP works with students through regularly scheduled training sessions to assist them throughout the
application process to study in the U.S. and, when needed, apply for financial aid from universities in the
The United States. ESP offers an intensive four-week summer program (01-31 July 2019) for selected students to
prepare them for standardized tests required for attending university in the United States, including the Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), ACT or SAT. It also includes academic counseling and essay writing
assistance. The program requires students to meet five days per week at the U.S. Embassy with the goal of
students applying to U.S. universities in late 2019.
We expect a sincere commitment from the students to give back their energy and time to the program. We
do not limit the program geographically; however, students applying from outside Addis Ababa must be able
to cover costs related to transportation to and from their residence, lodging, food, and others.
Among the total 30 finalist candidates for the ESP, 12 highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students
will be selected to benefit from the Opportunity Fund Program that covers lunch and local transportation
costs during the 4 weeks training program, as well as some costs related to standardized tests.
